Modeling can be a great career that offers flexible hours, connections with interesting and important people, and exposure to diverse but related industries (i.e. the fashion industry, the advertising industry, etc.). But there is a less-than-glamorous side to modeling, and some difficult truths potential models must understand, as outlined below.
1. Rejection Is the Norm
If you plan to make modeling a career, or even a part time job, prepare for rejection. Even models that go on to become very successful get rejected more often than not. A large part of the journey to a successful modeling career involves finding the right agency for your look/brand. Some agencies prefer a particular aesthetic; for example, there are agencies that prefer models with fuller figures, and still others that seek out models with tattoos and other embellishments. A successful start to a career is really about finding the agency that is looking for what you bring to the table. You may get rejected from a number of agencies before finding the right model agency in Las Vegas or elsewhere.
In addition to photography, Bartholomew Photography also scouts, develops, and represents models and helps them get signed to the right agencies. Feel free to fill out an application to gain exposure to modeling agencies in Las Vegas and other major markets. If we feel you’re a good fit for us, someone will get back to you within two weeks.
2. Body Standards Haven’t Changed Much
Despite politically correct statements suggesting more options for models who don’t fit into traditional industry standards, most of the models you see are still quite slender, and at least 5’8” (at least 5’11” for men). This doesn’t mean there aren’t option for those who fall outside of this strict framework, but those options aren’t as plentiful as you’ve probably been led to believe. Just know that the further you fall from traditional standards, the more focused you’ll have to be when searching for an agency. For example, if you’re 5’4”, you’ll need to focus on finding a model agency in Las Vegas or another major market that caters to that aesthetic. Generally, these agencies will have a division known as “Petite Models,” which are models between 5’1” and 5’7”.
On a positive note, there are now opportunities for models that may have been overlooked in previous generations. For example, gender fluid models are now in demand at various agencies around the U.S.
3. Modeling Careers Are Generally Short
The greatest demand for models is for those under 35. As people enter midlife and their bodies change, their careers generally come to a natural end. There are definitely modeling jobs for those over 35, but these opportunities are not as plentiful as they are for younger models. If you’re over 35, look for a model agency in Las Vegas or elsewhere that has a division known as “Mature/Classics Models.”
That said, it’s almost never too early to start modeling. In fact, it’s best to get started in your teens if you wish to make a career out of modeling. Bartholomew Photography can help your teen develop a winning portfolio. Contact us to schedule a modeling photo shoot.
4. Things That Work on Instagram May Not Work in the Modeling World
A very trendy aesthetic right now is lip filler, large false eyelashes, and very full—and often out-of-proportion—glutes. The reality is—like it or not—most agencies don’t care for this aesthetic. Most modeling agencies like natural beauty rather than manufactured beauty. The more natural you look when going to an open call or for an interview at an agency, the better. To take it one step further, if you are brave enough to forgo makeup altogether, then a bare face is best. A model agency in Las Vegas—as well as agencies in NY, LA, Miami, etc.— want to see the canvas that they’ll be working with. Lip filler, false eyelashes, etc. make it harder for them to evaluate that canvas.

5. Competition is Fierce
Nothing is more humbling than standing in a modeling agency next to a dozen or so beautiful people who are all at least 5’8”. There are a finite number of modeling jobs, and lots of people vying for those jobs. In that sense, modeling isn’t very different from any other type of career. The competition is especially fierce among male models: because there are fewer jobs for men, the competition for those jobs is greater. There is nothing that can be done about any of this—just know that it is a harsh reality of the business and every rejection isn’t necessarily personal. You could be a 5’11” beauty with abs and great skin, but if an agency already has a fleet of people who look like you, they may not have room for you on their roster. Just be willing to scout out some other model agency in Las Vegas or elsewhere and you’ll be more likely to find a landing place.
6. Modeling Isn’t Often a Path to Financial Security
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, median pay for models in 2022 was just over $43K/year. Unfortunately, with inflation in the U.S. dollar and soaring housing costs, $43K/year is no longer a comfortable living wage. Of course, well known international models can make millions, but reaching that level is exceedingly rare. For many, the ideal way to work modeling into your life is to view it as a part time job, a way to supplement your other income streams. Any model agency in Las Vegas will realize this and expect their models will have to juggle other jobs and school responsibilities along with the demands imposed by a modeling career.
And there you have it—six hard truths models must know as they begin their careers. Even though there are some difficult points models must come to grips with, modeling offers an incredible learning experience, interesting people, flexible hours, and a visual history of your life that you can look back on years from now.
